Quinic acid

Research findings indicate that the intestines of people who consume coffee frequently contain up to eight times more beneficial bacteria known as **Lawsonibacter asaccharolyticus** compared to those who do not. This was true for both regular coffee and decaffeinated coffee, suggesting that the increase in beneficial gut bacteria is not solely due to the caffeine content.

Laboratory studies have confirmed that quinic acid, an antioxidant component found in coffee, plays a significant role in the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Quinic acid is an antioxidant present in coffee beans as well as various plant-based foods such as apples, blueberries, and cherries, and is known to contribute to reducing inflammation and oxidative stress.

Chlorogenic acid, which is abundant in coffee, is broken down by gut microorganisms and converted into quinic acid. The research team estimates that this process promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria.
Additionally, the team explained that polyphenols, including chlorogenic acid, provide a prebiotic effect on beneficial gut bacteria, increasing the diversity of gut microbiota and contributing to enhanced immunity and improved digestive function.
The research team stated, “This study is a rare example of a single food, such as coffee, directly interacting with specific gut microorganisms,” and they assessed that it could be an important turning point in clarifying the connection between gut health and food.
Coffee is already well-known for promoting gastrointestinal motility and aiding in bowel movements. The findings of this study add a new dimension of “gut health” to the functionality of coffee.

Experts believe that “coffee consumption can positively impact overall health by promoting the proliferation of beneficial gut bacteria and increasing microbial diversity,” and they suggest that this could form the basis for a new health management strategy that combines gut microbiota and diet
